Last Friday the WAW charity dinner took place in the atmospheric setting of Genk’s Thor Park. More than 400 guests eagerly entered the ‘designer tables’ and witnessed an inspiring evening with a lot of attention for design. Graphic designer and typographer Ann Bessemans (PXL MAD) was the first to take the stage and gave a brief insight into her research into typefaces and their impact on visually impaired novice readers.<\/p>\n
Media artist Dries Depoorter, in his turn, got the room’s attention by explaining his most startling projects at a relatively fast pace. His Tinder In, an art project in which he juxtaposes profile pictures of Tinder and LinkedIn accounts, elicited a first collective laugh. His upcoming dating app, in which he wants to connect people to each other solely on the basis of their browser history, was a powerful conclusion to his mini ‘Ted talk’ for which he got an enormous applause.<\/p>\n
Designer of the Year Frederik Delbart was then presented to the public and was interviewed by Cynthia Reekmans – host of the evening – about life and work. Backed up by a visual presentation, one could become acquainted with Delbart’s unmistakable talent, enormous productivity and variety of design projects. The intimate intermezzo of ballet dancer Wim Vanlessen and his regular dance partner Aki Saito silenced the room and was clearly very much appreciated.<\/p>\n
The icing on the cake was the WAW auction, where auctioneer Armand Schreurs took the hall in his self-guided manner. With his sharp comments he got the audience fired up and even managed governor Herman Reynders to put an opening bid for Wim Vanlessen’s ballet shoes. “After all, you often have to walk on your toes in politics”. It provided the necessary enthusiasm for valuing the exceptional auction pieces. For the ballet shoes the hammer went down at \u20ac 550. The tea service of Piet Stockmans went for \u20ac 600 to a couple from Antwerp, the broche of Lore Langendries was sold for \u20ac 350 and the Idem stool of Frederik Delbart got \u20ac 850. Micha\u00ebl Verheyden’s scale then started a nice bidding war between two tables and eventually brought in \u20ac 2,200.<\/p>\n
Last but not least was Fred Eerdekens’ work, which was called for \u20ac 12,000 and was sold immediately. The entire auction brought in a total of \u20ac 16,550 which will go entirely to the projects of Een Hart voor Limburg. “A fantastic result”, they said. “Also the set-up of the evening, with attention for design and art from Limburg, was clearly appreciated and a lot of people asked us if we would go further with this formula next year.” So a very positive feeling on this first collaboration between Een Hart voor Limburg , Z33 and Wanderful.design. But the credits must mainly go to the talented designers who, together with the many partners of the charity dinner, have made this a successful project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
