De Duitse industrieel designer geldt als een boegbeeld van het naoorlogs functionalisme en inspireert tot op de dag van vandaag heel wat ontwerpers. Ontwerpen is dan ook de inspanning om producten te maken op een zodanige manier dat ze nuttig zijn voor mensen. Daarom is het meer rationeel dan irrationeel, optimistisch en toekomstgerichter dan berustend, cynisch en onverschillig. \u201cEen goed ontwerp is onopvallend\u201d luidde het als \u00e9\u00e9n van\u00a0 de tien designprincipes van Dieter Rams. \u201cProducten die een doel verwezenlijken zijn als gereedschap. Ze zijn noch decoratieve voorwerpen, noch kunstwerken.
