Hugo Duchateau explores the cornerstones of painting: color, shape, matter and the effects. Hugo goes one step further, to the hyperrealism and fundamental painting. He concentrates on the tools, the matter, the tension between progress and creation. In his paintings lines and surfaces are a game of controlled chaos in which the artist can experiment with color, shape and substance. His work also explores the tensions and simmilarities between culture and nature. He was involved as a teacher in Design at Het Stedelijk Hoger Instituut voor Visuele Kommunikatie en Vormgeving (SHIVKV).
