Kaspar Hamacher

designer

Kaspar Hamacher (°1981, Eupen) grew up on the edge of the High Fens nature reserve, where his father was a forest ranger. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht (2007), he returned to his native region. From his studio in Raeren, he works with local oak and deadwood sourced from the Belgian-German border area.

Hamacher considers himself more craftsman than designer. His signature is the ‘Ausgebrannt’ technique: burning out tree trunks with fire to create unique seating. He also works with chainsaw, chisel and other traditional techniques, and incorporates natural materials such as leather. Authenticity is central to every step of his design process.

He was selected for Toegepast 14 and coached Toegepast 17 and 18 together with Maison Caro. In 2010, he won the Henry van de Velde Public Award for his bookshelf ‘Das Brett’. His first solo museum exhibition, ‘Mother Earth’, took place at CID au Grand-Hornu in 2021. Since 2016, he has been represented by Spazio Nobile (Brussels), with his work shown at international fairs including PAD Paris, PAD London, Collectible Brussels, Salon Art + Design New York and NOMAD St Moritz. He is also represented by Twenty First Gallery in New York.
