Katrien Matthys studied both anthropology and visual arts. In 2007, she graduated as a Master of Fine Arts, Illustration from Sint-Lucas Ghent. In addition to making illustrations, concert posters and record covers, she is mainly engaged in her own work as an artist. Her personal observations and her own interpretations of the world around her merge into a surprising, eerie and sometimes disturbing image. The essence of the living being in all its many manifestations is central: human, beastly or monstrous … but still with a relativistic wink. In her work, Katrien Matthys goes in search of the tension field between colourful and dark, fantasy and reality, comfort and discomfort. Since 2009, she has also been teaching Arts and Free Graphics in different schools. Katrien is a laureate of Toegepast 13.
