Maarten De Ceulaer

designer

Maarten De Ceulaer (°1983) studied Interior Design at Sint-Lukas Hogeschool in Brussels and continued his studies at the Design Academy Eindhoven, graduating in 2008. He was selected for Toegepast 10. A strong passion for travelling inspired his graduation project ‘A Pile of Suitcases’, which was immediately picked up by Nina Yashar, founder of the renowned Milanese gallery Nilufar. Since then, Maarten has attracted attention for the highly evocative, poetic and playful touch he gives his objects. His work moves between art and design, with creations spanning objects, rugs, lighting and furniture.

De Ceulaer received the Belgian Young Designer Award (2007) and the Henry Van de Velde Award for Young Talent (2013). In 2009, The New York Times named him one of five young designers to watch. His work has been exhibited at galleries including Nilufar (Milan), Moss (New York), Mint (London) and Galerie BSL (Paris), and is part of the collection of Design Museum Gent.

In 2024, he presented the solo exhibition ‘Duet’ at Nilufar in Milan, featuring the Superquadric series and Stained Glass lighting. He developed the Feathers rug collection for cc-tapis and the Cairn Lights series, inspired by stacked stones in the Pyrenees, which debuted at Collectible Brussels in spring 2025. His Impulse wall light was shortlisted for the Dezeen Awards 2024. In 2025, Maarten De Ceulaer was named Designer of the Year by Knack Weekend.

He is based in Brussels with his studio in Anderlecht.
