Mattijs Brands

designer

Brands’ work starts from existing products, buildings and landscapes. Intriguing characteristics become opportunities to turn what’s present into bespoke and accurate answers to a brief. By reconfiguring what is already there, through elusive additions or simply by taking material away, his work investigates the thin line between the everyday and the exceptional.

After a short internship with Jan De Vylder, he spent several years as a project architect in the studio of landscape architect Bas Smets. During this period he led successful competitions and was responsible for projects both in landscape and public space; projects of various scales in collaboration with OFFICE KGVDS, Gehry & Partners, Annabelle Selldorf, Philippe Parreno, a.o. throughout Europe and the United States. He is currently working on personal assignments.
