Sofie Hermans
designer
Sofie graduated in 2009, specializing in Textile Design (Sint-Lucas, Ghent) and did an internship at Maison Marie Mees & Cathérine Biasino.
In 2011 she was selected to participate in MAD SHOP (later MARKED). This creative project enabled her to introduce her first collection in textile accessories, in which prints that originated from her passion about ‘the beauty of imperfection’, shaped her work. Sofie printed her graphic drawings in a small edition on objects like panties and bracelets, later complemented with leggings, scarfs, ties and pillows.
Since her graduation Sofie shares her passion and expertise about textile and creative design as an arts teacher in Fashion and Theatre Costume design at KAMM | KunstAcademie MaasMechelen and later on also as a teacher and head of faculty in the Material design specialization, which is part of the design study program at MAFAD (Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts & Design / Hogeschool Zuyd).
Sofie alternates between teaching and some freelance work as a textile and surface designer, focusing on the development of exclusive drawings that carry out some visual and emotional value. She loves to co-operate with other designers or companies. She translates the story of them through designing graphically some proper patterns, textile techniques and object; designs that all represent the client involved.
Frequently Sofie worked side by side with Mammae: she designed the detailed prints they used on their breastfeeding bras. The use of a fitting drawing on a piece of clothing expresses individuality. Moreover, a narrating or symbolical connection grows between user and product. She believes this provides an important added value and therefore the design will last a long time.
