The story of Recor begins in 1949 in Hasselt in Belgium, when René Corthouts, then 24 years old, starts a mattress production facility. Recor is born. The first mattresses were sewed together by René himself. He wanted to know and feel the final product inside out, so he could guarantee its quality.
René Corthouts was very committed to the company and its people. He knew every worker, his family and background situation. This was his favourite opening sentence when he met a new employee.
At the end of the 1960s René takes his business to the next level: He creates a range of living room furniture which is considerably extended in the next few years.
In 1983 the family business expands and Philippe and Christian – the sons of René Corthouts – join the Recor story.
A lot of people from Hasselt and the surrounding area work at Recor. In order to remain competitive, significant investments are made in the production facilities at the beginning of the 21st century. It also means that Recor can continue to produce furniture in its home city, Hasselt. In addition to focussing on innovation, Recor also aims at producing its products in a sustainable manner by, for example, better waste recycling.
In 2007, René Corthouts was the driving force behind the modernisation of our production. He often said: ‘If we are going to do this, we are going to do it right’.
In order to ensure the continuity of the family business, Charles and Adrien Corthouts – the grandsons of René – decide to join the company in 2016.
Belgian craftsmanship, durability, and a heart for people and the environment are the key success factors of Recor, and these family values are of great importance to the company.
