Ryou Jihyun

designer

Jihyun Riyou’s (Social Design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven) designs originate from a special collector’s mania. ‘I collect knowledge and stories, and convert these into an object or a design. I draw inspiration from daily life and from ordinary people.’ As an example, she mentions a technique that she learned from her mother in Korea: she always stores a few apples with the potatoes. ‘This is how I learned that if you store a potato and an apple together, you can preserve the potato for longer, because the gas produced by an apple delays the ripening process of the potato.’ She converted this memory into the “Save food from the fridge” project at Toegepast 16, where she built an installation to promote forgotten vegetables.
